Power Law in Dating

I believe most of us heard friends around saying “Date multiple girls/guys simultaneously, distribute the risk, so to find the Mr or Miss Right”. Make it a portfolio, just like your investment brokers usually say. However, it maybe wrong.

0.01% of Google is probably worth a lot, lot more (35 million dollars) than 100% of a startup that you’ll start. And most startups fail, in which case you’ll own 100% of nothing.

Said Peter Thiel in the book “Zero to One”. Our focus is to find the right girl, rather than seeing a pool of girls and hope the right one is in there.

So what is power law?

Power law is a functional relationship between two quantities, where one quantity varies as a power of another (wiki). For example, if you double the length of each side of a square, the area will get 4 times bigger. If you do the same to a cube, the size will get 8 times bigger.
These are the graphs of random distribution and power law distribution.

It is not about how many girls you are dating, rather what matters is if you will find the right girl at last. Similarly, it does not matter how hardworking you are, rather it matters if your work is creating value in the future. Same as the example of owning 0.01% of Google vs. owning 100% of nothing (failed startup).

Perhaps we should start thinking not to create a dating portfolio, instead, target the girl who you believe is the right one and work the hell out of it to make her happy.
